“The British Woodworking Federation expects to see homeowners using more natural materials over the next 12 months”
According to the British Woodworking Federation (BWF) the woodworking sector is “growing at pace.” There are multiple factors driving this growth, but a standout is the number of people who want to see more natural materials in their homes and offices. Best of all, with the government championing new builds, there are likely to be far more woodworking opportunities available in the near future: according to the Federation of Master Builders, we could see as many as 400,000 new homes created above shops or in highstreets, where commercial space is being refurbished into residential.
The BWF says that home- and business-owners are “choosing wood for both structural elements and features such as staircases, window frames, doors and interior furnishings.” This is part of a wider trend towards embracing natural materials, which not only add an air of beautiful authenticity to an interior, but can (in some cases) be better for you and more environmentally friendly.
In the case of timber, it is particularly appealing because of its aesthetic versatility, which can be incorporated seamlessly into a rustic farmhouse or a high-end dining room, and its durability, which means it can be used for a variety of functions. Add to that the fact that modern day consumers are far more aware of health and wellness issues, as well as environmental issues (both of which, the science tells us, wood is great for helping), and it is clear why timber has become such a popular choice.
The BWF says: “This [popularity of timber] is underpinned by the trend we’re seeing across the wider construction industry towards biophilic design and using natural materials to improve the health and well-being of building occupants.”
So, there’s a clear opportunity for craftsmen to focus on the aesthetic versatility and scientifically proven benefits of using timber. With housebuilding on the up, it’s one that you should consider capitalising on.
